A year?? Where did a year go? I was just holding my baby in my arms and now she is a year. Time is not fair. But alas, she is one, so we must celebrate! I have always wanted to throw a luau in honor of my Hawaiian roots. Seemed perfect that my daughter had a Summer birthday and it was also the hottest day of the year in North Carolina as we were in the midst of heat wave. If we could not actually be in Hawaii, at least it felt like it 😅

Isn’t that shark watermelon the coolest?? That was all my dads handywork with the help of some Pinterest inspiration.

For her cake, I purchased a three tier cake from our local grocery store bakery and just had them put her name on it. I decorated it myself with flowers and leaves to make it more tropical. This pack of leaves and flowers from Amazon are a great affordable option for decorating around the table and even on the cake.
What I found surprising was planning a luau was cheaper in July because all the summer stuff started to go on sale to prepare for Fall decor. I found a lot of stuff at Hobby Lobby for 50-75% off!

It was super cute and made it easy to make a garland
This umbrella wreath was such a fun addition to the coffee bar! It was super easy to make, and I plan on keeping it up for the rest of the summer and for future summer decor!
It was super easy to make. I used a Styrofoam wreath and a box of umbrella toothpicks. I cut the toothpicks in half so they would not stick out as far and used about a whole box of 200 on a 16″ wreath.

We were so blessed with having family come to town for the party. One of my aunts who was able to make it used to be a professional hula dancer in Hawaii, so she gave all the kids a hula lesson! It was the cutest thing ever 😍
We bought this pack of kids hula skirts and gave them to all the kids to wear and take home!
Overall, a pretty amazing first birthday party. Having a big first birthday is something we have done for both our daughters. They might not remember it, but it is a special memory that I will forever remember. I would love to hear from you and what you did for your kids first birthdays!
